To ensure that circuit breaker operation
is guaranteed under the most onerous conditions placed on the
substation tripping supply, circuit breaker trip coils are specified
to work with a minimum tripping voltage much below the nominal
battery voltage. The minimum trip voltage test is described in a
number of international and national standards such as IEC 56, ANSI
C37.09 etc.
Traditionally, this test was performed by
tapping the main tripping battery. This method however should not be utilised as it presents a
considerable risk to testing personnel, battery and breaker being
tested.
General purpose DC sources as well as
variac-based instruments are also unsuitable due to their inability
to maintain their output voltage precisely regulated at the high
peak currents drawn by trip-coils.
The TCT contains a very high speed
electronic voltage regulator which will accurately maintain the
output voltage constant whilst very high peak currents are drawn,
for a period long enough to allow the operation of the trip coil.
The precise level of test voltage during the entire test is always
known and guaranteed constant.
